While it is generally best for Items to inherit layout settings from the template, since changing these settings on the Template will effectively update all Items referencing that Template, it is sometimes necessary to override inherited layout settings on individual Items, either manually or by having multiple Masters with different layout settings.  To configure the way an Item will display on various Devices, override layout settings defined on the associated Template:

1. Log in to Content Editor on a development server as a user with appropriate permissions (Content Editor can also be accessed directly from the Sitecore Desktop).
2. Navigate to the Master or Item requiring configuration.
3. In the Layout Section, use the link (the text of the link will be either the name of the Layout if one has been selected or the default text “No Layout Specified”) at the top of each Device listing to associate the Device with a Layout and Renderings that should be processed when that Device is identified.
